In recent weeks, the University of Memphis has been very successful in competitions on a regional and national stage. From the football team being nationally ranked in the Top 25 in the country, to the men’s basketball team and women’s soccer team achieving the same accolade. Now, the UofM is aiming its sights on academic competitions, with students from the Fogelman College of Business and Economics having placed second overall in the Tennessee Valley Authority Business Case Competition.

According to City of Memphis public records, former Memphis football player Ernest Suttles had his indictment dismissed after a 2017 rape accusation. Despite the decision, Suttles remains banned while Nick Wayman, found guilty of the same crime, missed only one summer term of classes; Suttles has since sued the UofM.

When I became The Daily Helmsman’s Editor-in-Chief this semester, I wrote in my first column that one of my New Year’s intentions was to be a good editor who served as an educator not only to his staff but also to the campus community. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that everyone who worked at the newspaper this semester has gotten better at what they do, and I believe I have strengthened our relationship with everyone on this campus.

In the spring of April 1969, 75 Black Student Association members at the University of Memphis staged a sit-in. The sit-in included 75 students surrounding then-university president C.C. Humphreys’ office. The events that transpired on that day were commemorated on April 12 of this year in a panel discussion with members from the sit-in moderated by Shirletta Kinchen. Kinchen authored the book “Black Power in the Bluff City: African American Youth and Student Activism in Memphis,†which covers the 1969 UofM BSA sit-in and other historical events in Memphis.Â

The Allen Fossil Plant, just south of President’s Island in Memphis, warranted a new investigation by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) pertaining to water quality concerns. Senator Brian Kelsey (R-Germantown) brought the issue to light with Senate Joint Resolution 29, which calls for the removal of coal ash at the plant.
