From the Helmsman: A Public Safety Announcement

Yesterday we were notified by email of a robbery that took place near or on campus. Around 3 p.m. on February 11, 2020, the female victim reported to campus police that she was robbed at gunpoint and assaulted.

This all transpired from an initial deal she had set with an unknown person about something she was selling online. She said she got inside the car with four African-American men and one of them demanded her belongings at gunpoint.

After giving up her items, she said she was struck in the head and pushed out of the vehicle. They were last seen driving a silver Nissan sedan with a large dent on the driver’s side and tinted windows.

As a student community, we should look out for each other, however that doesn’t mean everyone is to be trusted. In the event of any situations like these where you want to sell stuff online, be sure to use extreme caution. Meet in public places like the UC during daytime hours when students are all over the building, residential hall lobbies in daytime hours, or even the University Police station.

If you have any information that can help, you can contact University Police at 901-678-4357 or police@memphis.edu. The Memphis Police Department can also be contacted at 901-545-2677.

Let’s keep this campus and our Tigers safe, together.
