PSA: There is still a great holiday between Halloween and Christmas

There is a meme that depicts Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Almost everyone has seen it. On one side, someone is dressed up in a Halloween costume or as a dancing pumpkin. The other side has Christmas.

I am so tired of seeing this meme.

We have a wonderful timeline during the last three months of the year. In October, we celebrate Halloween. December is reserved for Christmas. But in between October and December, we have a month that is dedicated to another holiday.

November is for the Thanksgiving season. You can’t just skip over it and celebrate Christmas after Halloween.

Don’t get me wrong, I think some Christmas activities can be celebrated in November, like Christmas shopping or buying decorations. But Thanksgiving is important too. It is a time to be with family and friends and be grateful.

Also, the best food comes from Thanksgiving feasts. When it comes to food, I would pick Thanksgiving over Christmas. Turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls, pies, casseroles galore. How can we skip over a holiday that gives us amazing feasts?

After stuffing yourself, you can sit around with your family and watch the “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade†or a football game.  Then you can even go play football in the front yard.

While some believe Thanksgiving should not be celebrated due to its origins, I still believe Thanksgiving should be used as a time to focus on family and being grateful for what you have in life.

And if you don’t want to celebrate Thanksgiving or you just want to give during the season of (thanks)giving, some places in Memphis offer Thanksgiving meals for the homeless, like the Memphis Union Mission.

Steve Carpenter, the director of development at Memphis Union Mission, said the mission will hold three meals to accommodate all the visitors and serve about 100 turkeys. Monetary and food donations are accepted for the meal.

So by all means, go Christmas shopping and decorate a tree if that is what you want to do. Just take some time this month to think about what you are grateful for and give thanks.
