Trolley Night goes on despite weather or trollies

Trolley Night will go on snow or no snow—with our without trollies.

The South Main Association will host their monthly Trolley Night this Friday Feb. 27 with live music in six different restaurants on South Main.

As usual the event is free and to attend with no cover charges at any bars or restaurants. With the weather being as cold as it is, Trolley Night will be a little different than it is in other months but it will still stick to a similar format.

“On average we have a couple thousand people attend every month,” South Main Trolley Night Director, Mark Parsell said. “The weather will hopefully not have an effect on Trolley Night but we feel that the music in doors will help congregate people from business to business.”

Despite its name, no cable cars will be running on Trolley Night.

The old-fashion streetcars were temporally pulled from services in 2014 after a couple burst into flames. Memphis Area Transit Authority has put green hybrid buses in their place. However, the buses may work better for passengers since they do have air conditioning

South Main started Trolley Night in 1998 and has had been a monthly event in downtown Memphis ever since. During the summer months, people normally wander the expanse of the district hopping from shop to shop. The music is also played at a main stage at Douglas and Associates, in addition to several other acts at various other acts.

Other venues include Double J Smokehouse, the Green Beetle, Ernestine & Hazel's, Grawemeyers, and in the Arcade building. At 550 South Main there will be Song Writers Night from 7 to 9 p.m. Preforming will be Rice Drewty, Rocky Tallent, Andrew, Carbigeo, Melinda Millingan, Mara Daniele, and Kitty Dearing.

There will be five other performances on Trolley Night. Tim Plunk will preform at Double J will be from 6-8 and Kirk Smithart from 8:30 to 12:30 p.m. At Ernestine & Hazel's, Pistol and the Queen will perform from 8 to 11 p.m. and Evan Farns will be at Grawemeyers from 6-9.

Most of these restaurants along with other such as the Blue Monkey and Rizzo's Diner will have both food and drink specials for Trolley Night. Double J Smokehouse will have drink specials for the Grizzlies game that night including $12 dollar beer buckets and $3 shots of fireball.
