Cyber Monday continues into week

Between classes Monday, students found themselves in computer labs eager to check off their holiday shopping lists with Cyber Monday deals.

Shop.org conducted a survey that anticipated 129.2 million Americans would shop on Cyber Monday, a 6.4 million increase from shoppers last year.

While some Cyber Monday deals lasted throughout the day or for a few hours, others will continue until Dec. 1, so there is still time to find deals on the World Wide Web.

Bradley Gilliland, freshman engineering technology major, and Daniel Brewer, freshman computer engineering major, purchased PC games.

"It's called the Autumn Sale," Gilliland said. "It's a special right now with big-name games at 50 to 75 percent off. It will go on for about a week."

Brewer said he prefers shopping on Cyber Monday to Black Friday because he can avoid the crowds and doesn't have to get up early to get a great deal.

The University of Memphis does not have a policy about students using the University's network to shop online.

"The only policy is a strict policy about sharing data and downloading from unprotected websites," said Britnee Stringfellow, senior social work major and student worker at the Information Technology Department Helpdesk. "Like illegally downloading movies or music. As far as shopping online goes, it's fine."

Stringfellow does warn students about identity theft and giving out personal information to illegitimate websites.

"The biggest thing is, if you don't trust the site, don't do it," Stringfellow said. "We are not responsible for any scams that go on, but if the site is unreliable, don't share any information."

Amazon, known for its electronics sales, releases Cyber Monday deals in limited supply. As inventory runs out, Amazon promises to add new deals for the remainder of the week.

Joey Clark, junior civil engineering major, said he browsed several websites including Best Buy, Target and Amazon.

"Amazon has a bunch of good deals on movies," he said. "Like 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' on Blu-ray for $9.99."

Target is promoting Cyber Week - seven days of deals ending on Dec. 1. Customers who spend $50 online will receive free shipping and certain purchases include a free gift card.

Clark said he saw good deals and thought about buying a few things but didn't because he didn't need anything that badly.

"I'm saving my money for tuition for next semester," he said.
