Sophomore Amberlie Ezell led the Tigers to a fourth-place finish at the 2018 Withrow Invitational and finished with a career-high aggregate. Murray State hosted the event at the Racers’ on-campus facility, the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range.
Ezell posted her previous career-high aggregate at the same competition the previous spring. She was the only Tiger with a top-10 aggregate finish. Her 1,169 aggregate placed her in the eighth spot. She improved from last year’s Withrow Invitational. She shot a career-high 581 in smallbore, four points higher than her smallbore score at the 2017 Withrow Invitational. She was one point shy of her career-best air rifle mark of 588.
Freshman Matt Dorey recorded his second-best total of 2017-18 with an 1,157 aggregate. His 584 air rifle and 573 smallbore scores were his second-best totals of the season.
Junior Leighton Dempster tied her career-best in air rifle with a score of 593. She previously hit the same mark last fall against TCU. Dempster placed third in the air rifle division and was Memphis’ top shooter in the discipline. Dempster has shot 591 or higher in air rifle six times this season. The junior only shot 591 or better twice in her two previous seasons.
Kentucky, the No. 3-ranked rifle team in the nation, claimed the top spot at the Withrow Invitational with a 4,696 aggregate (2,328-2,368). Memphis’ aggregate score of 4,646 was the second-best cumulative score this season. The Tigers shot a 4,663 aggregate against TCU on Oct 28. The hosts, No. 4-ranked Murray State, finished second (4,685), No. 14 Jacksonville State finished third (4,648).
The Withrow Invitational marks the first tournament of 2018 and the start of the spring season for the Memphis rifle team. The Tigers spent the fall at their new facility, but this is the first spring season for the new Memphis Rifle Facility.
The Memphis rifle team is back in action this Saturday. The team will travel to Lexington, Kentucky, to face No. 3 Kentucky. The match time is set for 8 a.m.
