UofM grad school fair offers students information for options after college

The process of finding jobs post-college may seem difficult at times, but the University of Memphis has made strides to make this task easier by hosting job fairs and other promotional events.

The Grad School Fair will take place in the McWherter Library’s room 225 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 29. The event’s purpose is to help graduate students obtain jobs within their particular industries and fields.

“We want to help folks understand their alternatives for the future. The goal of the fair is awareness of graduate school options,” said Robin Poston, the dean of the university’s graduate school.

Poston said there are 126 graduate program options available at the UofM, and one in five UofM students are grad students.

The graduate program also offers benefits to its students.

“The ABM (accelerated bacherlors/masters) program is a great deal,” Poston said. “UMGlobal has online programs, scholarships and fellowships available, and over 20 graduate programs are ranked top in the nation.”

Cody Everett, a member of the Memphis Career Preparation Academy, emphasized the importance of events like the graduate job fair.

“Events like this provide our graduate students with ripe opportunities to capitalize on their talents and abilities,” Everett said.

The Memphis Career Preparation Academy guides students who are applying for internships and jobs. Students are able to complete mock interviews and receive feedback on their strengths and weaknesses.

Ultimately, the graduate fair represents a test that many graduate students have been preparing to take for a long time.

Graduate students who attend the event will be able to establish connections with potential employers and businesses interested in their services. Professional attire is advised for the event, and companies will most likely be interested in individuals who bring extensive and detailed résumés.
