U of M students share ways they prepare for final exams

The seasons are changing, flowers are blooming, rain has been pouring down for the past few days and students are filling up the Technology Hub and the McWherter Library in preparation for final exams.

The 2018 spring semester is coming to an end at the University of Memphis, and some Tiger students are using specific study methods to prepare for their finals. Some rely on their faith, study or utilize online tools, among many other techniques.

Akasha Austin, junior, public relations major

“Whenever I have a final exam, I usually write out the study guides that my professors give me, so I can memorize it. If I don’t write it down, I know I won’t be able to remember the material.”

Jeremiah Davis, junior, creative mass media major

“The first thing I do is read the Bible because that gets me right with God and clears my mind and the burdens I may be going through. I also study and look over the study guides my professors give me.”

RaSean Jenkins, senior, history and pre-law major

“I’m pretty much a test taker, and I love taking tests, so I feel like I can finesse any test. I try to study, but I’m not too much of a study person. Also, I try not to study too much because that can cause you to overwork yourself and overthink, so I try to study for 30 minutes. It’s also good to look at the material before, so you can refresh your memory before you take the exam.”

Deidre Edwards, junior, criminal justice major

“For an exam or a final, I usually write the material down over and over because it really helps with memorization.”

Amanda Johnson, sophomore, nursing major

“I usually look to see what’s going to be on my final because most of my professors give study guides. So I break it down into sections, and I study a certain amount of stuff each day. Then, on the final day, I quiz myself. Sometimes I use Quizlet or my flash cards, and I always put my phone on ‘do not disturb,’ so I won’t get distracted.”

Lloyd Goodman, senior, psychology major

“I use any type of cheat technique, so pretty much Course Hero, Cliff Notes, Spark Notes or Quizlet. I sometimes even Google the question, then I’ll screenshot the answer and use it to prepare for the test.”

Amanda Brown, junior, biology major

“If it’s a final, and I know the class is hard, I will take four days prior to the test to study, and I’ll use note cards or Quizlet. I’ll even ask people who took the class before. It’s also important to pray and get some sleep before the exam because all-nighters don’t work.”

Johnathan Russell, junior, business marketing major

“I study a lot, usually a week prior to the exam, and I shut out any distractions like social media and television. I also use flash cards and study in groups with my classmates.”

Abdullah Abaji, junior, psychology major

“Prior to the test, I go to tutoring for my chemistry classes. I usually go to the CCLC (Chemistry Community Learning Center) on campus because it’s very beneficial. I also read the book because most of the material from the test is in there.”

Anthony Browning, senior, sports science major

“I usually go to Barnes & Noble to study because I can’t go to the library and study. The library is way too quiet and secluded, and it makes me zone out.”
