Today is Valentine’s Day, one of the most maligned holidays of the year for most people, as it is the day where your love life is put on display.

For some, that will mean a collection of Instagram stories depicting their perfect relationship. For others, today serves as a subtle kick in the guts as they are reminded of how lonely they are.

On this holiday, there is always an opportunity for romance or a chance for disaster. Luckily for you, The Daily Helmsman has provided some last-minute Valentine’s Day ideas for you to avoid the latter, whether you are head over heels in love or as single as a bean.

Broad Street

Broad Street is located 10 minutes from campus and has an entire host of things to do today. For those who don’t want to drink alone or those who feel like celebrating the single life, the Broad Liquor Store is hosting ‘Love Sucks’ and will have drink specials and half-priced appetizers from 2 to 9 p.m.

After grabbing a bite at the Liquor Store, why not work off some of those calories at Memphis Civil Axe Throwing? Axe throwing, as barbaric as it sounds, is taking America by storm and has proven quite popular among UofM students. Tickets are $20 per person, and with the “Game of Thrones†final season fast approaching, why not let your inner Targaryen out and throw an axe or two?

If axe throwing sounds too violent, the Rec Room is right next door with vintage arcade games, ping pong, foosball cornhole and board and video games. Heralded as one of the best breweries in town, Wiseacre is a fantastic place to wind down. Finish off the day of love sipping a Tiny Bomb with your better half or some friends.

On Your Feet! (The Orpheum)

“On Your Feet†is the story of how Emilio and Gloria Estefan came from Cuba to America to chase their music dreams. The couple reached the top of the pop music world before they almost lost it all.

“On Your Feet†is directed by two-time Tony Award winner, Jerry Mitchell for Kinky Boots, and is based on a book by Academy Award winner, Alexander Dinelaris for Birdman. Tickets are still available for tonight’s 7:30 p.m. showing, starting at $25 each.

University of Memphis

If you are into the arts but “On Your Feet†is too far to travel to or out of your price range, there may be a couple more options that might be better suited to you.

The UofM theatre is putting on a new rock musical called “Be More Chill.†The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Main Stage Theatre.

The theatre and dance department are not the only ones looking out for you this Valentine’s Day. The UofM Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music is hosting “Date Night at the Scheidt: A Valentine’s Celebration in Song.†Admission is free and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Harris Concert Hall.

Just a simple dinner

If you are just looking to keep it casual this Valentine’s Day, and are looking for a some new restaurants to try, the café at Crosstown Arts, Grecian Gourmet Taverna or Edge Alley are good recommendations.

Whether your Facebook profile reads, “In a relationship,†“Single,†or “It’s complicated,†try your best to enjoy today. Show this great city the love it deserves and enjoy the many things Memphis has to offer.
