SGA plans to make changes for students during 2019

The University of Memphis Student Government Association (SGA) announced major events and changes happening on campus within in the next months for the student body.

The UofM SGA announced major events and changes happening on campus within the next month for the student body. SGA said the theme for Black History Month this year will be ‘Memphis Memories and Millenials.'

SGA vice president Antonio Scott swore in three new senators at large, Leodan Rodriguez, Jada Watson and Willie Williams.

SGA president Kevyanna Rawls said her plans for the SGA senators were to continue the work from the spring semester.

“We will be going to the end of the semester,†Rawls said. “We did really well last semester, but we need to keep that momentum as we move to the end. We’re going to finish strong and go out with a bang.â€

Rawls said Spirit Week is coming, and she plans for it to be different from last semester.

“Last year, we partnered with the Student Activities Council,†Rawls said. “This year, we will be doing something similar, but things will look a lot different. So be aware of that. We’ll give more information as that comes to us.â€

The SGA approved a statement declaring the UofM is dedicated to focusing on the mental health of students.

“It will be saying that the university is committing to mental health for all students for overall quality health,†UofM student services senator Monica Casrin said. “Jane Clement is going to approve our statement, and the bill will be ready by next week.â€

Scott said the official theme for Black History Month will be honoring founding chairman and former president of Stax Records Al Bell.

“Our 2019 Black History Month theme is ‘Memphis Memories and Millennials,’†Scott said. “We’ll be infiltrating the memories of Memphis that have forged millennials into the millennium.â€

UofM SGA safety communications senator Jake Myers said repairs on campus are not that major.

“I don’t have any big things in the works right now,†Myers said. “I’m trying to get some things rolling. I’m going to email Bruce Harber about some basic fixes around campus — mainly areas where the light bulbs have burned out.â€

UofM SGA secretary of finance Will Ritter said all funding for the rest of the semester has been used.

“We are officially out of funding for the spring for graduate and undergraduate students,†Ritter said. “But we still do have summer funding, so if you’re trying to go anywhere, let us know.â€

Rawls said students can apply for scholarships through Tiger Scholarship Manager until Feb. 1.

Rawls said the presentation of the Black History Month resolution will be presented Feb. 1 in the Rose Theatre.

All the SGA resolutions celebrating Black History Month and upcoming Women’s History Month and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month passed unanimously.
