Boyfriend assaults student in front of police services

A University of Memphis student was allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend on Jan. 23 while she was running toward campus police services.

According to a campus police report written by officer Ted Quinn, the 23-year-old student “bailed out” of her boyfriend’s car while he was driving down Zach Curlin Street.

The boyfriend, Kavious Maritn, 24, is not a student.

Martin chased her after she jumped out of the car, according to the police

report.

Martin then was allegedly drinking and then verbally abused the female student.

He grabbed her and threw her to the ground just as she made it to campus police doors, according to the report.

Officers ran outside and placed Martin under arrest. He was transported and charged with domestic assault.

Colonel Ray Craft of the campus police said he was thankful that an officer responded so quickly.

“We had an officer actually in the dispatch office when she came in,” Craft said. “I’m thankful that we had someone who was thinking quick on their feet.”

Craft said that the two involved in the disturbance on Zach Curlin were likely in previous fights.

“I’m just thankful that the young lady was wise enough to know where officers were located and to come to us to get help,” Craft said.

Craft, a seasoned U of M officer, says he is no longer shocked at the capabilities suspects seem to possess.

“I’ve been in this thing for some years and I don’t really get too surprised over incidents like I used to,” Craft said. “But sometimes you’ll be wondering like... ‘come on, man.’”

Man arrested for trespassing in business school

A 26-year old man was arrested for criminal trespass when he was allegedly caught sleeping at the Fogelman College of Business and Economics.

According to a University of Memphis campus police services report, Thomas Espy, 26, was found sleeping on a couch on the north side of the business school.

He was found during a foot patrol, the report said. Espy had previously been arrested on Dec. 21 for aggravated criminal trespass.

“When this individual was checked he was in our system as being already on trespass,” U of M police services Colonel Ray Craft said. Craft said that anyone’s name who has previously trespassed would immediately come up in a search.

Since police services recognized Espy from before, Craft said that there was no question what action would be taken. “Obviously he’s done something here on campus where we had to ‘trespass’ him,” Craft said.

Craft said he could not confirm if Espy was a former student. “Sometimes we’ve had incidents with those who were students at one time and now they’re not students anymore,” Craft said. “They are familiar with the campus, and they’re familiar with buildings.”

While the alleged trespasser was sleeping when found, Craft said it is not at all unlikely to see people, mainly students, sleeping on campus.

“You could probably walk through any building, especially the business building, that has couches and things of that sort, and you’ll see students, maybe even in the library, where they’re laid out and asleep.” Craft said.

Two more underage students were caught publicly intoxicated Jan. 30 on the first floor of South Hall.

Eighteen-year-old male resident Perry Bradley advised that 18-year old Oshae Thomas, found lying on the walkway, had consumed several drinks over the last several hours.

An ambulance was promptly called.

“If we get a call, we go over, and if we find alcohol, we’ll write it up,” Craft said. “Obviously if you are publicly intoxicated, that’s a whole other animal.”

Craft said that this situation would definitely fall under the latter. “I would think that’s a good parameter, saying that she was lying down in the walkway,” Craft said. “She may have had too many drinks. We know that students do drink, and if it’s something that we can refer to the students, then that’s what we will do.”
