The Daily Helmsman interviewed 100 students in person and asked them, “do you favor raising student fees to build a garage or would you rather park at Park Avenue?â€
Nearly 60 percent of students said they would rather shuttle from Park Avenue than pay higher student fees to build a parking garage.
The new recreation center will likely eliminate 700 parking spaces. The University of Memphis proposed building new parking garage to replace those spaces, but it will cost $18.6 million and students will pay the majority of the cost.

If the garage is not built, students will likely be forced to park on Park Avenue and take the shuttle to the main campus, according to Angela Floyd, director of Parking Services and the U of M.
Right now most full-time students pay a mandatory $42 per semester to park at the U of M main campus. These same students will pay $69 per semester starting fall 2017 in order to pay for the new parking garage.
