Campus crimes: Cars vandalized and $4,000 stolen from U of M bank account

1. Campus extortion

 

A University of Memphis student said someone he met online extorted him for money on Nov. 7, according to a campus police report written by officer Walter Davidson.

The victim told police he met the suspect on social media, and they exchanged private photos. The suspect demanded payment and threatened to publish photos otherwise. The case is under investigation.

 

2. Campus car theft

 

A student had two pairs of headphones and antifreeze stolen from his car at the Park Avenue campus on Nov. 6, according to a police report written by officer Chanancy Donaldson.

The 25-year-old student told police he locked his car doors, but he noticed two pair of headphones missing and his hood popped open around 8 a.m. He noticed his antifreeze was taken from the vehicle.

He did not see any damages on his doors, and it is unknown how the suspect gained entry.

 

3. Construction equipment vandalized

 

A Caterpillar backhoe’s window was shattered in a Zach Curlin Street parking lot Nov. 5, according to a campus police report written by officer Britany Dorado.

A 25-year-old faculty member told police he noticed the driver-side window shattered on the Caterpillar backhoe. The door was still locked, and nothing appeared to be stolen from the inside. There was a concrete chunk inside the cab. The window was valued at $400.

There are no known suspects at the time.

 

4. Campus car theft and vandalism

 

Two U of M students found their vehicles vandalized and broken into Nov. 5, according to a campus police report written by officer James Vickers.

The 21 and 22-year-old students told police both of their vehicles were broken into. Both vehicles were similar in description and parked near each other. Both students arrived at the same time and noticed both of their driver’s door locks were pried, and the steering columns were broken. One student said cash was taken from the center console along with the windshield wiper lever. The other student said nothing was stolen from his vehicle.

Due to a thunderstorm in progress, fingerprints could not be taken.

 

5. Campus bicycle theft

 

A student’s bicycle was stolen at South Hall on Nov. 5, according to a campus police report written by officer Martell Washington.

The 21-year-old student told police he walked to the University Center at 9 p.m. and did not notice if his bike was missing or not. He returned to South Hall at midnight and noticed his bike was missing. Washington and the victim went back to the UC to make sure his bike was not there. Washington also searched the area around South Hall and was unable to locate the bike.

 

6. $4,000 in checks forged using University bank account number

 

More than $4,000 in checks were forged to two different buisness accounts under three names from Sept. 28 to Oct. 18, according to a campus police report written by officer John Hudgens.

A U of M faculty member told campus police about the forgery incident he discovered on Oct. 31.

An unknown person created checks and used the routing and account number of the U of M for a total of $4059.71. The case is under investigation, according to the report.

 

7. Campus car vandalism

 

A U of M student’s car was broken into and vandalized in the Southern Avenue parking lot Oct. 31, according to a campus police report written by officer Claude Berry.

The 19-year-old student was told by police services that his vehicle had been broken into, and the right front passenger door window was broken out. 

The student said there was no property taken from his vehicle.

 

8. Campus car burglary

 

A student’s tablet was stolen from his car at the Carpenter Complex Apartments on Oct. 27, according to a campus police report written by officer Robert Frans.

The 24-year-old student told campus police someone entered his unlocked blue Ford Fusion and took a tablet. The case is under investigation.

 

9. Campus car vandalism

 

A U of M student’s truck was vandalized in a break-in attempt at the Central Avenue parking lot Oct. 25, according to a campus police report written by officer Tina Crowe.

The 21-year-old student said someone attempted to break into his Ford F-150, and the door lock was damaged. The student parked his truck near the Holiday Inn lot and went to class. The student came back 7 p.m. and noticed pry marks and the driver’s door lock punched out. The student said nothing was missing from the truck

 

10. Unlawful dorm entry

 

A U of M student’s laptop charger was stolen from her dorm at Centennial Place on Oct. 25, according to a campus police report written by officer Emmon Fitchpatrick.

The 18-year-old student told campus police she left her computer plugged in on her desk in her room at 9:16 p.m. She returned to her dorm room at 4:20 p.m. and discovered her computer charger missing.

The student said the door was locked at the time.
