Advertising In The Daily Helmsman


The Daily Helmsman print edition is the most efficient and convenient way to reach the largest concentration of educated 18-24 year olds in the City of Memphis, and the entire University of Memphis community of 23,000 consumers.  Each edition of The Helmsman is distributed to more than 70 locations on campus, to several nearby off-campus businesses, and to the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in downtown Memphis.


The University’s student population of 20,000 contributes more than $175 million annually to the Memphis economy.  When combined with faculty and staff incomes, the yearly contribution exceeds $285 million.

The Daily Helmsman is a five-column, tabloid-size newspaper that is generally published four days a week, Tuesdays through Fridays, during the Fall and Spring semesters. Daily circulation is 6,500 during the Fall and Spring. Readership exceeds 22,000.

Special Issues


The Daily Helmsman offers you several special opportunities to reach the U of M community of consumers. Dates of these special issues are indicated on the Publication Schedules, which can be downloaded.


Freshman Orientation Issue


Seen by thousands on campus for summer school, and mailed to the homes of approximately 4,500 new first-year students and their families, this issue is full of informative news about the upcoming school year and is eagerly read by all. In 2010, this issue publishes August 11 and the advertising deadline is August 4.


Back-To-School Issues


Coinciding with the first day of Fall and Spring semester classes, these issues are filled with articles and news items of interest to the entire University community. This is an excellent way to deliver your advertising message with great impact to The University’s faculty, staff and more than 20,000 students, many of whom are attending U of M for the first time! In Fall 2011, this issue publishes August 29, and the advertising deadline is August 20. In 2011, the Spring Back-To-School issue publishes January 12, and the deadline for advertising is January 6.


Career Fair Issue


Published in support of The University’s annual Career & Internship Expo, this special issue features stories to help students better prepare for their futures and contains a special pullout map of the floor plan of the fair. Advertising in this issue will make those participating organizations’ tables destination points for the many U of M students who attend the Expo. Due to widespread student interest in this special issue, businesses not participating in the Expo also can benefit by advertising their employment and internship opportunities. In 2011, this special issue publishes September 20, and the advertising deadline is September 16.


Basketball Tip-Off Issue


Tiger Basketball is wildly popular and this special issue annually kicks off the new basketball season with stats and stories about the upcoming season. Eagerly read throughout the University community, this issue is an excellent way to show your support and help boost the Basketball Tigers as they make their annual run for another conference championship and NCAA Tourney berth.


Providing an additional advertising opportunity in this issue is a special double-page, 2-color pullout of the men's 2011 basketball schedule, which can be posted on bulletin boards, and dorm room, apartment and office walls. A limited number of advertising units are available on this calendar for $100 and $200, on a first- sold basis. In 2011, this special issue publishes November 1, and the advertising deadline is October 28.

A similar double-page, 2-color pullout of the men's 2011 spring basketball schedule will appear in the January 12, 2012 Spring Back-To-School Issue. A limited number of advertising units also are available on this calendar for $100 and $200, respectively, on a first-sold basis.


Spring Fashion Issue


Of lasting interest among U of M students, this special issue features the newest fashion trends in clothing, shoes, accessories, hair and nails. It provides an excellent advertising opportunity to let The Helmsman’s 22,000+ readers know where they can find the latest in these goods and services. In 2012, this issue publishes March 20, and the advertising deadline is March 16.


Graduation Issues


Published one month prior to Spring and Fall graduation commencements, these special keepsake issues contain many congratulatory greetings that are seen by over 22,000 consumer readers on campus, and are mailed to the family homes of all graduating students. These issues are a perfect way to generate goodwill, to reach those who will be purchasing graduation gifts, or to make your employee recruiting needs known. In Fall 2011, this issue publishes November 9, and the advertising deadline is November 4. In Spring 2012, this issue publishes on April 3, and the advertising deadline is March 30.


Spring & Fall Finals Issues


These special issues are your last chance to get in your last word! Both issues feature a full-page, 4-color final exams schedule and important information about changes in hours, services and policies of particular interest to the U of M student community.


These issues remain in the news racks across campus for the duration of Final Exams Week, thereby giving advertisers several days of exposure to their message for the price of a single advertisement.


The Fall Finals Issue is particularly ideal for advertising gift purchase ideas for upcoming Fall Graduation and Christmas. In 2011, this issue publishes December 7, and the advertising deadline is December 2. The Spring 2012 Finals Issue publishes April 25, and the advertising deadline is April 20.

These double-page, 2-color pullouts of important dates are a valuable reference to all U of M students. They appear in the second issue of the Spring and Fall semesters and can be found posted in dorm rooms, Greek houses and apartments throughout the city.


A limited number of advertising units are available on these calendars for $100 and $200, on a first-sold basis. In Fall 2011, this calendar appears in the August 30 issue of The Helmsman. In Spring 2012, this calendar will appear in the January 18 issue.


Tiger Football Schedule


This double-page, 2-color pullout of the 2011 Tiger Football schedule will appear in the August 31 issue of The Helmsman. A limited number of advertising units are available on this calendar for $100 and $200, on a first-sold basis.


Dining Guide


With U of M students, faculty and staff spending in excess of $62 million annually on food, this guide is an excellent way to attract their interest to great restaurant values in Memphis. The Guide appears in The Helmsman six times each during Spring and Fall semesters, and the Summer session. Ads are sold on a modular basis at a cost of $300 for six insertions during the Spring, Fall or Summer. Advertisers can accentuate their ads with spot blue for an additional $50 for all six insertions.


Football & Basketball Homecoming


Specially designated issues of The Helmsman launch the many festivities that fuel enthusiasm for U of M’s football and basketball homecoming games. Advertising in these special Homecoming issues provides an excellent opportunity to generate goodwill for your business among the entire U of M community and to show your support for the Tiger football and basketball programs. Special discounts on color are awarded to advertisers who participate in these issues.
