Chattanooga congressman Zach Wamp announced his gubernatorial campaign yesterday during his visit to the FedEx Institute of Technology at The University of Memphis.

One of four Republicans running for the executive office, Wamp has served Tennessee's 3rd District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1995.

Republican opposition for the 16-year congressional veteran is comprised of Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey of Blountville and Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam.

Democratic candidates in the race are Jim Kyle, Memphian minority leader of the Tennessee Senate; Kim McMillan, Clarksville lawyer and former state House majority leader; and Mike McWherter, a businessman from Jackson.

Early voting begins in five months.
